About Sam Houston State University

Austin College began on the campus where Sam Houston State University sits today.
It held classes in what is known as Austin Hall. It’s the oldest continuously-used state-owned building of higher education west of the Mississippi. Austin College relocated to Sherman, Texas, in 1876.

In 1879, a group of Huntsville citizens purchased the building after they had failed to have their city designated as the Texas state capital. Instead, the town was selected as the location for a normal school whose mission was to educate teachers for public schools. It was the first teacher-training school in the southwestern United States. The school was named Sam Houston Normal Institute in honor of Sam Houston, one of the greatest heroes in Texas history.

In 1919, four-year degree programs were added. In 1923, the school became Sam Houston State Teachers College. After World War II, enrollment grew tremendously as soldiers returned from the war to take advantage of the GI Bill. By 1964, enrollment had grown to 5,000, increasing to 8,500 by 1970, the year after it became Sam Houston State University.

The school’s motto is “The Measure of a Life is its Service.” The school strives to live that motto each day. Sam Houston State University embraces their legacy while also meeting the needs of their  students whether they are traditional or online. It is the 12th largest university in Texas with an enrollment over 21,000. The Chronicle of Higher Education listed the school as one of the Fastest Growing from 2003-2013. It ranks first in placing students in the workforce within 12 months of graduation. Historically, over 50 percent of students are first-generation.
