About Florida International University

Florida Senator Robert M. Haverfield introduced a bill in 1965 to begin the planning of a state university in Miami. Four years later, the school was set up in an abandoned air traffic control tower at the Tamiami Airport. When the school opened in 1972, there were no phones, no furniture, and no drinkable water. Yet almost 5,700 students enrolled. It continues to hold the record for the largest collegiate enrollment opening in the country.

It did not take long for the school to outgrow the air traffic control tower. More buildings were added to the campus. However, the tower stands today in the center of the campus and is known as the Ivory Tower.

U.S. News & World Report ranks the business undergraduate program and the international global policy and administration graduate program as first in the country. It also ranks the school in the top 100 public universities across the United States.
