About Delaware State University
In 1891, The Delaware College for Colored Students began as part of the 1890 Morrill Act which created land-grant colleges for minority students. Land was purchased for $8,000 just north of the capital, Dover, Delaware. In order to differentiate between the Delaware College in Newark, which would eventually become the University of Delaware, the name of the school changed to the State College for Colored Students.
Initially, students could choose from five courses of study. In 1897, the school added a normal program which was designed to prepare educators. To help prepare students for college study, the school offered a preparatory program which ended in 1917. A model grade school was established which awarded a high school diploma when students completed the program. The high school was discontinued in 1957. The normal school became a four-year school in 1911.
The school became Delaware State College in 1947 and gained university status in 1993. Today, the school is recognized for its education and public service programs. It provides students with an opportunity for world-renowned research. Enrollment is over 4,600 students.
Delaware State University Accreditation Details
The Middle States Commission on Higher Education regionally accredits Delaware State University. This accreditation indicates that the school undergoes periodic review to confirm that they continue to offer programs that meet or exceed the criteria set forth by the Commission. The University agrees to address any area that the Commission identifies as needing improvement during its review.

Delaware State University Application Requirements
First-year students must submit an application along with ACT or SAT scores. In order to be accepted, they must have a minimum 800 on the SAT or 17 on the ACT as well as a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Transfer students who have fewer than 30 college credits, as well as first-year students, must provide official high school transcripts. Those who have less than 12 college credits after high school graduation must also submit SAT or ACT scores. All credits must have been earned within the past 10 years. Students must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher in all college coursework attempted.
Students who wish to enter graduate programs must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. One transcript must display the conferring of a bachelor’s degree or higher. Official GRE, GMAT or MAT scores are also required along with letters of recommendation. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA or higher in all undergraduate work.
Delaware State University Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time undergraduate tuition at Delaware State University is $7,868 per year. Part-time tuition is $280 per credit hour for in-state students. For out-of-state students, it is $16,138 per year or $638 per credit hour. Undergraduate programs offered online are $400 per credit hour and range from $438 to $515 for graduate programs regardless of residency.
To qualify for financial assistance, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Even students who do not feel they qualify for assistance based on income should complete the FAFSA as they may qualify for aid based on merit. Aid may be offered in the form of:

Many financial aid packets also include student loans which must be repaid upon graduation. Employer, military and veteran benefits are also accepted.
